In 1958 Ruger introduced the Bearcat revolver in .22 rimfire. This small single action .22 revolver was an immediate success. The name "Bearcat" came from the engraved cylinder scenes of a bear on one side and a mountain lion on the other. They were well made revolvers made out of high quality metals by skilled craftsman. These Bearcats have been a favorite since they were introduced due to their small size and light weight, making them perfect for trappers and backpackers; as well as a safe first handgun for youths or females. Over the years of production there have been numerous changes that make up 7 distinct variations. This example is serial number 59531, what is called by collectors a "4A variation". The "4A" model was produced from 1962 to 1969. The characteristics that make up the 4A variation are large serial numbers with no letter or number prefix, Walnut grips, a steel ejector rod housing, and a brass trigger guard. This Bearcat is used but has been maintained well and is in very good condition overall. The original blue factory finish would rate at 90%. There is one spot on the cylinder where something was spilled that removed the bluing. There is a close up picture of that spot. There is some high edge wear where it has been carried in a holster and it has some thinning of the blue on the barrel, but overall it has a great look to it and no rust pitting anywhere. The brass trigger guard is in excellent shape with no gouges or scratches. As you can see in the pictures, the sides of the hammer have darkened like most Bearcats you see due to being left "in the white" from the factory. If so inclined it could be polished back to bright. The factory original American Walnut grips are in excellent shape with no cracks, scratches, repairs, or chips. The grips show very little to no visible wear, and they are fit to the gun beautifully. The bore is excellent in both the barrel and cylinder bores. This Bearcat at full lock has no wiggle and everything on this revolver functions 100% like it left the Ruger factory yesterday. If you have been looking for an affordable Ruger Bearcat that is in great shape but you can still fire it without hurting the value, this is the one!!
