Description:
SOLD...Very honest 1873 Winchester with special order extra length barrel. The barrel is 28" octagon and is in the best shooting caliber 38-40. S/N 286209 and made in very early 1889. The bore shows some wear and has the normal black powder roughness but rifling is visible all the way through and no big craters and no rings or bulges. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects with no backet out primerrs and no bulged cases. Hammer notches are perefct and positive. Strong springs throughout. I test fired this gun with factory cowboy action cast bullet loads and it shoots OK at close range out to about 40 yards. If any longer distance shots are to be made you would be much better shooting jacketed bullets as the accuracy is much better. This is an old trick I learned many years ago in shooting these ole rifles with way less than perfect bores. This rifle would make a great shooter with jacketed bullets. The metal is absolutely un touched and has a deep dark brown patina throughout. No pitting on the gun at all. Has a ding on the end of the muzzle as you can see in the photo but it does not get into the bore at all and does not in any way effect the accuracy of the gun. Has the original dust cover that  loose but still retracts with the lever throw. The dust cover stop screw is badly burred up as you can see. All the markings are readable but the heavy patina makes some look a little light but they are all there and would show much better if they were cleaned a little but I am not touching it. Someone at one time has carved the letters WTM in the brass carrier{see photos}.. Also the same initials in the stock explained later in the description. This gun has never been cleaned on or messed with and looks like right out of the attic. Has the original front and rear sights. The screw heads are all sharp and not buured up but the dust cover screw as mentioned above. The wood is very nice. The forearm fits tight and still mostly proud to the metal and has no splits or cracks.  No big dings or handling marks. Has had a coat of varnish added sometime in the past and looks realy nice. There is a heart shape inlay as you can see in the photos behind the forearm cap on the bottom. Do not know if it had an inlay in it and has fallen out of just carved in. Would look good if you are handy with ivory, pearl or even brass or silver to make an inlay if so desired. The butt stock is very nice also. No splits or cracks and fits tight to the metal with no gaps as you can see. It does have some sanding scratches by the butt plate on the left side so has been lightly cleaned at one time but is not undersized at the tangs or the receiver. It is slightly undersized at the butt plate on the left side only. The right side is still full and proud to the butt plate. Shows a couple very light dings from honest use and what is left of some old initials looks like WTM just like the ones on the brass carrier. There are very small about 1/4" high and barely into the wood. I have owned this gun for several months now and never even seen them until today !!! I can send close up photos of these if anyone wants to see them.  Someone has owned this gun with these initials no doubt. Probably the same fellow that did the carved heart. All in all, not a bad gun at all. It does have a few warts but they are honest and I want to show them so the buyer has an idea of what he is looking at. Still a nice ole 73 with special order 28" barrel that you don't see evry day. I have it price accordingly as it is not perfect but still much better than a lot of these you see in the same price range. At least it works like it should and makes a geat shooter with the proper loads and bullets and it look good also.
