Description:
For those of us who hunt deer with a bow, the added joy of hunting upland game with a century-old external hammer shotgun is very understandable.  It connects us with the past, and it is a little greater challenge for the hunter and a little fairer chase for the game. Thanks to the ready availability of factory-produced low-pressure shells for Damascus and twist steel barreled shotguns, these classic American hammerguns can come out of the gun cabinet or closet, and with proper reconditioning be back in the field.  This gun is not only ready to go back to the field in the hands of a hunter, but as shown in the lead picture it has been there.

Take a step back in time with this New Ithaca Gun (NIG) 16 gauge hammer shotgun.  Manufactured in 1900, this gun is properly restored to bring it back to the condition similar to what it would have been after a couple years of use by the original owner.  The old finish on the stock and the forearm was removed; dents and scratches steamed and sanded out to the degree possible while preserving the character of the gun; a hand-rubbed stock oil finish applied; and the checkering re-cut.  The exterior of the 30” twist steel barrels is flawless as refinished using the traditional process of slow-rust bluing and etching, and the bores are excellent as lightly honed.  The scroll work and lettering (“New Ithaca Gun”) on the sides of the action are re-cut.  The color case hardening is redone by Flat Creek Gunworks, Fort Collins, CO.

The barrels on this American classic have 2-3/4” chambers and are both choked Modified (.016).  The wall thicknesses (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle are 037/.035/.044 and at the middle of the barrel are .047/.043/.046.  The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .039/.044/.042 and .050/.050/.045, respectively.  This gun weighs 8 lb 2 oz.  The drop at the comb is 2” and at the heel 3”.  Length of pull from the front trigger to the end a modern Ithaca sunburst pad is 14-1/8”.  The gun locks up tight and on face.  All serial numbers, 49756, match.

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  This shotgun has been fired using low pressure shells produced by RST Corporation for Damascus barreled shotguns.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one a hundred and sixteen years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed.  The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Stephen Wesbrook, 703-625-4830; Back in Time, LLC  --  preserving late 19th and early 20th century double shotguns.
