Description:
This is a very nice Colt Single Action Army revolver that was engraved by the legendary master engraver Louis Daniel Nimschke. The revolver is in .45 LC with a nickel finish and a 7-1/2" barrel. The address on the barrel is one line and has serifs. The left side of the frame has two-line patent dates and is mounted with an original set of 1-piece ivory grips. The grip was made in the original style from two slabs of ivory affixed to a central, wooden spacer block, which was probably added by the Nimschke shop and is definitely period to the gun. This revolver was produced in 1876 and the gutta percha grips weren't introduced until 1882. The ejector housing is of the first type with the bulls-eye ejector rod head.
This revolver was engraved by the L. D. Nimschke Shop with about 85% frame coverage of foliate arabesque patterns with a fine peared background. The top strap is engraved in a feather pattern. Both sides of the barrel boss are engraved in a diamond and dot pattern and a hunter's star on the ejector boss and base pin boss. Matching foliate, arabesque patterns extend 4-1/2" on each side of the barrel and each side of the muzzle with a nick and dot border pattern around the address, which terminates in a foliate arabesque scroll.
The ejector housing is exceptionally engraved with a large dot-and-dash border panel on the outer radius and foliate scrolls on both ends. The backstrap is engraved with Nimschke's distinctive sunburst pattern, with a diamond center and feather "rays" on the periphery. The trigger bow has the hunter star on the bottom. The cylinder is matching engraved with foliate scroll on the flutes with nick and dot around the rear of the cylinder.
Engraved, early single actions are quite rare and are seldom encountered in an un-altered state. Only a few deluxe, engraved revolvers in the Nimschke style are known, and almost all are in the 22,000 serial range, except for the few that are thought to have been on the Centennial Wheel. Multiple experts think that, because of the extra deluxe engraving and the deluxe grips, this gun may have been on the Centennial Wheel.
