Description:
SINGLE ACTION ARMY .38-40 WITH SCARCE 7 1/2" BARREL, #338XXX, MADE 1920, really quite an unusual revolver because by this date there were few Single Actions made each year and most had shorter barrels with the .38-40 in particular rarely made in this 7 1/2" length, obviously this one was a working gun as it shows honest carry wear, I wouldn't be surprised if it was shipped to either the Southwest (keep in mind Arizona didn't become a state until 1912!) or possibly here in Montana as up until about W.W.II these areas were pretty wild, retains some good aged barrel blue mainly on the top and in the more protected areas by the ejector housing, excellent barrel address marking as well as frame patent dates, fairly bright blue in the flutes of the ejector housing and some very dark patina aged blue in the cylinder flutes but mainly the frame and cylinder are an uncleaned dark gray/brown patina with blue in the most protected areas, exc. screws and cylinder base pin, grips show wear but fit well and has one chip at the back left bottom corner, front sight has not been altered, bore looks to have a little leading in the grooves with fine lands and all should scrub out near exc., interestingly there is a very thin "fine notched shim" that is in the hammer well aligned with the sighting groove in the top strap.  I'm not sure what is holding it in as it is very thin and I owned this one a while and never even noticed it!  Would be easy to remove, but I think it adds character and actually improves the sight picture for finer shooting. Whoever originally owned this one was a shooter! Interesting piece with a lot of honest character and a great appearance
