Description:
Colt, double action revolver, ANTIQUE, Model 1878 Double Action Froniter Revolver, caliber 45 LC, 5" barrel (which is correct with a revolver having an ejection rod), FINISH IS NICKEL, IS WORN, AND EXHIBITS LIGHT PATINA ALL OVER, barrel is very faintly roll marked "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. USA" which is the correct marking, BORE IS EXCELLENT, ejector rod has been replaced and is shinier than the rest of the revolver, grips are of smooth Walnut and are not checkered or numbered to the gun as original grips should be, SURPRISINGLY THE REVOLVER SEEMS MECHANICALLY SOUND AND FUNCTIONS IN BOTH SINGLE AND DOUBLE ACTION,
Serial number unknown (serial numbers are usually stamped on the butt, the back of the cylinder, and on the loading gate), The serial number on the butt has been buffed off and all that iis present is the numeral "1". The serial number on the back of the cylinder represents the last three digits of the complete serial number and is what looks like a "3, 3, 3" with each digit being located between each of three cylinders. However, the original center "3" has been" stamped over with the numeral "1", Serial number on the loading gate which also would represent the last 3 digits of the whole serial number is "355". Unexplicably, there is also the number "270" stamped on the side of the frame above the front of the trigger guard (probably a rack number).
IN SPITE OF ALL MENTIONED ABOVE, THIS IS ONE NICE 'OLE PIECE THAT I WISH COULD TALK, IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THIS MODEL CAME OUT ONLY FIVE YEARS AFTER THE SAA'S, SOLD AS A COLLECTOR'S ITEM ONLY AND PURCHASER MUST AGREE TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT BY A COMPETENT GUNSMITH IF HE INTENDS TO FIRE IT, Retail value $1200.00, Sale priced at $995.00
