Description:
Very sharp Pre War Winchester 70 in the scarce 22 Hornet caliber with practically new Lyman Alaskan 2 1/2x scope. Serial# 28xxx Mfg. 1940. Matching bolt.
Bluing is excellent throughout with exception of floor plate which shows scratches and some finish loss at carry point. Wood finish is also very nice with a few scuffs and scattered compression marks.
I have confirmed this rifle shoots standard 22 Hornet and not K-Hornet!
There is a period side scope mount that is not quite the nightmare of most, since it did not require a cut out in the stock as did all others. The rear dovetail in barrel has filler and the hood is absent in keeping with the scope set up. Also noteworthy is that the root of bolt handle has been scalloped slightly and reblued to clear the scope's bell.
There is a factory installed Lyman 48 WJS with full base for receiver sight, but the apeture slide is missing.
Mechanics and bore are superb.
While perhaps not meeting the standards of the purist collector, this is still a beautiful rifle in far above average condition that will easily outperform and outclass any standard rifle made today. There is nothing quite like a pre war 70!
