Description:
Along with many other manufactures, Colt was contracted to build the standard military muskets during the Civil War. This one has the 1864 marking on the lock along with the US and Colt's manufacturing markings. This gun is also marked US on the buttplate and has the VP and Eagle head on the bbl. These military muskets were 3-band with a 40" bbl and 58 cal. They were furnished "in the white" with blue only on the sight and a few various other small parts. This gun is in good overall cond with some pitting at the back portion of the bbl around the nipple area. There is also some blood pitting between the front and 2nd band. Otherwise the metal is smooth and clean. The bore has good rifling with just some light to moderate pitting and roughness throughout. Overall cond of the bore would be good. Action is crisp and solid. The wood is in surprisingly good cond with no major problems. A faint cartouche is still showing. It has had a coat of oil added at sometime. Overall fit is VG. A good looking gun that would make a great display piece. Civil War Colts are among the most desired contract rifles.
