Description:
SCARCE, SPECIAL ORDER 1886 SMOKELESS POWDER .33WCF WITH 24" ROUND BARREL AND FULL MAGAZINE, MADE 1905, this is one of my favorite Winchesters and for some reason is still a bit under-appreciated mainly because a lot of collectors don't understand the caliber- which was one of the most powerful early smokeless rounds, being a .45-70 case necked down to .33 caliber. This model known as the Extra Lightweight Rifle came standard with extra light round barrels and half magazines with shotgun butt stocks and many were takedowns which usually proved to be less accurate than the solid frame models. This one is a solid frame and was special ordered with a full magazine, so it looks like an '86 ought to look! I called the Cody Museum and have a sheet showing that this rifle was originally shipped with the rare full magazine, also lists rubber shotgun butt plate (which it has), being a light barrel, the mag tube is actually larger than the barrel at the muzzle (it is important to verify these that show up with full magazines as many have simply had replacement full magazines installed outside the factory), this early example- the .33WCF was introduced in 1902- is in particularly fine condition retaining most of the original blue on the barrel and mag. that shows some dulling/thinning from age mainly on the top of the barrel, original buckhorn rear sight with Lyman half-moon and ivory bead front sight, receiver sides retain good blue with stronger blue showing in the back 2/3s on the right side and a bit more overall on the left side, exc. blue on the bolt, the balance on the receiver mixing plum/gray/brown on edges, bottom and receiver ring, exc. wood with very tight wood to metal fit, exc. Winchester embossed butt plate, exc. screws, exc. bore, tight action, great looking later 1886 Model and super scarce with factory full magazine! I think if I were around during this time period I'd have ordered a rifle exactly like this one...maybe with a Lyman 21 receiver sight...
