Description:

Inv. 5450

Colt Mdl 1873 Single Action Army Ser. 1134XX. Cal. 45 Colt, Barrel length 7-1/2".

This magnificent specimen is described in an original Colt factory letter as having been made in 1884 and delivered to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt Plant on December 17th. 1884. The gun was then shipped to the Springfield Arsenal where it remained unissued. Eventually a lot of 600 pistols were stamped NJ and loaned to the New Jersey Militia where they remained unused. Eventually they were sent back to the Springfield Arsenal, where they were stored for a period of time and then eventually sold to the public.

The reader will note that the barrel has not been cut to 5-1/2". As was done to the mass majority of these 1873’s in the early 1900’s when the .38 proved to have limited stopping power against “drug-crazed” Moro Warriors in the Philippines.

This particular SAA came from an old family estate in New jersey and has the initials NJ stamped under the barrel just above the cylinder pin.

The condition of this gun is nothing less than extraordinary. It retains about 95-96% of the original factory blue. The only loss is some mild surface thinning on the left side of the barrel towards the muzzle, on the ejector housings and some slight sharp edge slivering. Probably due to holster wear.

There is also a very faint hair like cylinder drag ring. The butt strap does have a few pin pricks, but nothing severe. The case colored frame is beautiful and also has 95-96+% of the original finish remaining.

There is no rust anywhere and all parts are correct. All numbered parts, the frame, trigger guard, butt plate and cylinder all match. The walnut grips also retain about 95-96% of the original lacquer. The bottom of the grips show some evidence of nicks and dings, but there are no splits or chips anywhere.

The left grip panel has an oval cartouche with the initials FH for Capt. Frank Heath located just below the date of 1884. Capt. Heath was the U.S. inspector at the Colt Factory at that time. The right side also has a cartouche of conventional lozenge shape which appears to have the initials DFC (David F. Clark) in script.

All the fire blued screws are brilliant and as fine as the rest of the gun. A couple do show some very slight marring. The chambers, force cone and recoil shield show no use. The chambers all still have the original factory blue.

The bore is brilliant, sunshine bright, with razor sharp rifling. The bore, like the chambers, still has the original factory blue. The bottom of the barrel is stamped "P" and DFC.

There is no evidence anywhere that this gun has been fired since it left the factory. It comes with an original Colt Factory Letter of Authenticity.

This gun is for the advanced super critical collector who is looking for an awesome center piece with justifiable bragging rights....$39,750.
