This stunning Beesley (from Purdey's) is the epitome of a London Best Sidelock Gun. Made 1891, the gun has the famous Whitworth Fluid Steel barrels marked with the 2 St James address. Beesley is perhaps best known for his inventions and patents but he made some fine guns as well.
The condition of the gun and the barrels is excellent and the bores are shiny. There are a couple of small dings on the barrels but they do not appear to show inside at all. The wood has likely been refinished but done very professionally.
The gun has the beautiful rose and scroll engraving which the best guns used in this era and do in fact use today. There is a 3rd fastener. The barrels are nitro proofed at 2 3/4". There is a modern canvas and leather case with the Maker's label.
This firearm is from the Oliver-Brice Collection. The principal owned a private equity investment firm in Switzerland which allowed him to travel extensively in the UK and Europe. His passion was finding and researching high quality/investment grade British and European double shotguns of the highest quality. His collection is extensive and includes a number of unique firearms like this one.
We've sold Purdeys and Hollands and all the others but can't recall a finer example than this.
