Here is an antique Colt Lightning Model Slide Action Rifle. This well-made rifle illustrates Colt’s relatively unsuccessful attempt to gain more of the firearm market from companies like Winchester and Remington; but this wasn’t for lack of quality. The Medium Frame was the first of these slide action rifles to premier, and was particularly aimed at being a natural companion to Colt’s pistols. 32-20, 38-40, and 44-40 were all popular pistol cartridges that the Medium Frame Lightning was chambered for, making it unnecessary to carry more than one variety of cartridge.
