Description:
The Lyle Rescue Cannon was invented by David A. Lyle of Springfield Armory.  The cannons were used from the late 1800's to 1952 when they were replaced with rockets for throwing rescue lines.  In 1877 the Army Board of Ordnance assigned First Lt. David Lyle, a West Point and M.I.T. graduate to begin research and testing of a rescue gun.  Of the 3 types Lyle fashioned, the 2 1/2 inch bore (64 mm) became the U.S. standard line-throwing gun.

It is estimated that by 1906 the gun had saved over 4,500 lives and it remained in use and production through WW II and until 1952.

This museum quality example has been in a family vault for 70 years and has not seen the light of day. This speciman is marked "US/LSS" for United States Lifesaving Service.  Crisp muzzle markings include "1905" for the year of manufacture, "no. 692" for the number of the gun produced, "R.I.W." for the manufacturer, Richmond Iron Works and L.M.F. for the name of the Inspector
Condition is very fine overall.  Brass is clean and shiny, markings are crisp and the smooth bore is clean,  The wooden carriage is sound with hints of a reddish paint.  The original wooden quoin for adjusting elevation is in excellent condition..
This speciman includes the VERY RARE model 1936 brass firing mechanism which accepts a 32 calibre blank.
