Description:
Springfield,  ANTIQUE,   ORIGINAL FLINTLOCK,   Model 1808,  federal contract musket, Springfiled Model 1808/1809 pattern,   this one mfg. by S. Cogswel ln Albany, New York, under federal contract during 1813 for use in the war of 1812,

LOCK:   rear of hammer marked "S. Cogswell",   front of hammer marked  "SNY (State of New York)" over "Albany",   lock is stained in some areas with age and use,   markings are clear and sharp,  appears original and to have never been polished,   some scattered light pin prick pitting located in center area,   very strong positive cock,   flash pan, hammer, spring, and frizzen also are original and appear to have never been polished,  A REALLY NICE ORIGINAL LOCK,

BARREL:   caliber .69,   42 1/4" in length,   breach end exhibits unreadable inspector's marking along with horizontal and vertical "SNY (State of New York)" stampings intersecting each other,   bore is dark but is not heavily pitted and should clean up to Fair to Good condition,  only moderate pitting in some areas up near muzzle,   outside of barrel is covered with a very smooth even brown patina,

Our first thought was that the brown coloring was caused by being hung over a fireplace or tobacco stains, which we have run into before, with guns having been hung on walls in dens for years where owners smoked.   We now believe that the metal on the gun was treated with a Rig-like (gun grease)material quite some time ago and sat in an attic for many years accumulating dirt and dust.   We've cleaned two areas to show markings in front of lock and part way down the barrel.  This is to demonstrate how well the barrel will easily clean up simply by using five ought (00000) steel wool and a WD-40 type petroleum solvent.   The barrel when cleaned will then exhibit a very smooth patina and little staining with virtually no pitting except around flash pan which is more heavily pitted from normal use,

STOCK:   full Walnut stock with three barrel bands,   band retaining springs,   correct rammer,   missing sling swivels,   stock retains original finish exhibiting normal handling marks,  there is a chip out of the top front of the comb which can be easily corrected,   EXAMINATION  OF THE STOCK IN THE AREA JUST BEHIND THE LOCKPLATE WILL REVEAL THE INSPECTOR MARKINGS IN THREE CIRCLES JOINED IN A TRIANGLE,  CIRCLES CONTAIN A "V" FOR VIEWED AND WHAT LOOKS LIKE AND "I" IN ANOTHER CIRCLE BUT WE CANNOT DISCERN WHO THE INSPECTOR WAS,   THERE IS ALSO A CLEAR "SNY (STATE OF NEW YORK)" STAMPED INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE BUTTSTOCK

A WONDERFUL OLD ORIGINAL FLINTLOCK,   LEAVE IT ALONE TO TELL ITS STORY OR SPEND SOME TIME PROPERLY CLEANING UP THIS FANTASTIC "ATTIC FIND" MUSKET AS EXPLAINED ABOVE TO EXPOSE IT'S BEAUTIFULLY AGED ORIGINAL PATINA AND ENJOY A FINE PIECE OF WAR OF 1812 AMERICAN HISTORY,
Retail value $3000.00,   Sale priced at $2249.00
