Description:
This is an engraved depiction of James Walker's “Gettysburg – Repulse of Longstreet's Assault”, which depicts a panoramic view of the decisive action of July 3, 1863: Pickett's Charge. The viewpoint is some distance behind the Union center with smoke and shell bursts enveloping the stand of trees defended by Alonzo Cushing's Battery A, 4th U.S. Artillery, and which formed the axis of the Confederate advance. The foreground is a mass of Union troops and light artillery rushing to reinforce the line while just to the left of center, Gen. Lewis Armistead (CSA) sits on the ground, surrounded by Union troops tending to his wounds. He is depicted handing his personal effects to Capt. Henry H. Bingham for delivery to Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock (USA), his close friend from before the war. The print is in very good condition with some mild toning along the middle of the image, as well as some minor foxing at the edges. The print is housed in a wood and plaster moulded frame measuring 3' 9 5/8” x 2' 3/4” with trompe-l'oeil woodgrain along the surface. The print was engraved by famed artist Henry Bryan Hall, and was published in 1873. This is a splendid piece of historical art, attractively presented, and would make a fantastic addition to any gun room or library.
