Description:
This is a handsome sword that measures 37 1/2” overall, with a 31 7/8” single-edged, slightly curved blade with single fullers on the forte and double fullers on the foible. The blade has a bright, original polish with some small spots of darker freckling along the edge, while crisp, 2/3 length, etched USMC and filigree motif panels are present on both sides. The ricasso reverse has an etched Carl Eickhorn trademark under the langet. The hilt has a typical “Mameluke” guard with forward and rear langets, straight quillons with acorn finials, and slightly toned, white celluloid grips. The metal fittings retain 90-95% of the original gilt finish, and a flaked, but otherwise intact, leather sword knot is attached. The scabbard has a few minor scratches and marks on the bright, bright steel body, but is otherwise excellent without any dents or other blemishes. The sword is accompanied by a shield-shaped wall mount with large metal USMC Eagle, Globe & Anchor emblem in the center. The display is designed to hold the drawn sword and scabbard crossed through the middle. This is an excellent example of one of the most iconic US military swords, made by an historic Solingen maker, and would make a wonderful addition to a collection.
