They are very scarce and highly collectible and the majority saw extremely hard use in the field and as such do not surface in high condition if they surface at all. This trapper sports the full magazine, saddle ring and stud, walnut stocks, carbine butt, post front sight and folding ladder carbine rear sight. Given the condition, this little rifle could tell some stories. All metal surfaces are basically a gun metal grey with spotting and there isn't really any metal finish remaining. Walnut forend is very good with no cracks or major chips. Buttstock is very good with no cracks but is missing a 1” piece at right and left tang. Perfect working order. Bore exhibits visible rifling with normal black powder abrasions. Right side frame has one replaced screw. A scarce little carbine. According to Madis, the Trapper Carbines feature standard length forearms until barrels reach a length of 15” or less. ".38 WCF" is stamped perfectly at breech, properly spaced and could not have been trimmed. Due to short barrel, the "P.W." is stamped forward of the rear sight. The post front sight is exactly 1-1/4” from muzzle to center. Barrel band is 7/8” from muzzle to center. Barrel has proper magazine set-back and taper. Muzzle is slightly rounded and shows no signs of recent shortening. All of these characteristics are indicative of an original short barrel carbine. Shipping is $50, includes priority mail and full insurance. It costs more than this with full insurance, of course, but I will pay the remainder of S&I costs. Call me soon if you want to make a reasonable offer, since this rare carbine is priced to sell quickly.
