In fact, Colt only made 2,556 octagon barreled Burgess rifles, The story goes that when Colt brought out this model Winchester produced prototype revolvers! An agreement was made that Colt would discontinue the lever action rifle line if Winchester would call off their proposed revolver manufacturing!  Anyway, these excellent Colt lever actions are now very difficult to find and most saw very hard frontier service, so surviving examples are often in poor condition, this one is quite nice with excellent markings including the rampant colt on the left side of the frame and all barrel markings, serial number in the 3XXX range, fine aged blue barrel and mag mixing plum and brown, mostly gray receiver, original buckhorn rear sight with Rocky Mountain blade front sight, fine wood with good wood to metal fit and only the beginnings of a slight crack in the forend ahead of the sliding loading gate (this is a thin portion of the forend and is often heavily chipped and cracked with long slivers out in this area), fine action with lever spring only slightly weak, nice screws AND EXCELLENT SHARP BORE!
