As Charles Newton wrote in Fred Adolph's book entitled "Modern Guns", the place of the three barrel gun was often thought to be used for Midsummer hunting. This was to satisfy the urge of most hunters desire to shoot 365 days a year even when the normal game season was closed. It has been said that these  lightweight three barrel guns were perfect for woodchuck and crow hunting during the off-season. This particular gun would be a delight for such shooting.
