ORNATE PERSIAN NIELLO INLAID DAMASCUS CARABELA SABER AND SCABBARD CIRCA 1700’S. 33” o/a with 25” very fine Damascus blade made without ricasso and with large Persian maker’s cartouche inlaid on the right side. Silver niello inlaid steel hilt and scabbard which is also inlaid with maker’s cartouches on both sides. Mosaic bone grip panels with lotus pattern pommel. Pattern of saber known as a carabela or Karabala (See Orez Perski’s book PERSIAN ARMS AND ARMOUR, plate 28, type 4, and plate 38 fig. e.). Excellent, untouched original condition and exceptional quality. The finest Damascus steel patterning we have seen on an Islamic sword and very probably certainly from one of the best of the Royal workshops.
