Description:
Early configuration with non-grooved receiver. Has the thinly stamped banner on front ring, Crown BU 459 proofs. Matching serial numbers on the components, including the stock. Serial #31351 places this at the beginning of the "early range" of these rifles, according to Jon Speed's book, p.16-17. We removed the stock to verify no internal cracks=OK; there is a suspect "streak" under the bolt knob, but seems intact at this time. (NOT a heavy-recoiling rifle, right?) The "Mauser" stock banner is thinning, suggesting finish has been "refreshed" at some point. Buttplate appears factory original. While apart we noted the front tee-nut missing, which ties-down the fore end to the barrel; related to that, the front sling swivel is a replacement, stamped "Made In Italy." Rear swivel likely also a replacement. 25-1/2" barrel has a surprisingly beautiful, crisp, clean, shiny bore and rifling, from muzzle to the chamber! Mechanicals seem fine inside and out; we suspect this rifle would shoot REALLY well (they usually do). Magazine, in case you haven't noticed, is not correct, and is stuck in the lower housing. we did NOT try to remove it with more than finger pressure, though we believe it wont take much to get it out. We see no obvious modifications (file marks, hammer dings, etc.) to get that mag in there.
Now that you know all the bad stuff we see, lets sum-up: Not a "perfect" rifle, but exhibits several early, rare features and would make an excellent type-specimen addition to your Mauser Small Bore collection.
