Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol with 14K Gold Winchester Presentation Medal, .31 Cal, mfg. 1857-1860 with 3 1/2" barrel. This pistol was originally part of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. corporate archives and was presented to Winchester employee Wilfred E. Blair in 1926 along with a 14K Gold medal and pin in recognition of 25 years of service. Wilfred Blair was born in 1880 and lived in New Haven County, working for Winchester between 1901-1937. Upon his retirement he attended the New Haven Senior Service Banquet held May 18th, 1937. His original program from this event is also included. The pistol is in outstanding original condition showing very little use. By far the finest Volcanic we have ever offered. The barrel retains 85-90% original bluing showing only slight drifting to plum along the high points. Even the face of the muzzle still retains most of it's original finish. Most Volcanics encountered have either case colored hammers and levers or case colored hammers with blued levers, however both are unusually blued on this example. The hammer, lever, and breech block retain approximately 90% original bluing. Even the bolt and inside of the breech block show 85% bright original finish, further attesting to the fact that this gun saw very little use. The brass frame has a pleasing, untouched dark patina with crisp edges. When held in proper light, the factory polishing marks can still be seen on all flats of the frame. This is a highly unusual detail so see on any brass frame lever action as it would have been the first thing to wear away. The engraving is equally crisp and sharp throughout. Identical examples of this factory engraving pattern can be seen on pages 22 & 23 of "The Winchester Book" by George Madis. Original post front sight and dovetailed rear sight are in perfect condition retaining 80% finish. The trigger & tension spring appear to have been case colored and retain 85% mottled finish. Original brass magazine follower and spring. Original screws are crisp and retain nearly all their original finish. The grips are serial numbered to the gun (upon removal) and retain 85%+ original varnish. There is an old 1/4" x 1/8" chip at the right rear toe. Otherwise the grips fit perfect with no additional cracks, chips, or repairs. The action is very crisp and functions perfectly. There is some play with the lever when in the closed position and I suspect it may need to be tightened slightly within. The bore is excellent for a Volcanic, showing clean and sharp rifling front to back with only lightly scattered blackpowder frosting near the breech. The presentation medal & pin are manufactured by Panikoff Jewelers of New Haven, Connecticut, and are housed within their original presentation case. The pin measures just under 9/16" in diameter and is marked "PANIKOFF" on the reverse. The medal measures 1 1/4" in diameter and 1/8" thick. The obverse features a portrait of Oliver F. Winchester and is marked "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS COMPANY O. F. WINCHESTER FOUNDER". The reverse is inscribed "PRESENTED TO WILFRED E. BLAIR IN RECOGNITION OF TWENTY-FIVE YEARS SERVICE 1901-1926". The clasp and ring are both marked "14K". A truly stunning example of a factory engraved Volcanic pistol. Only about 850 of these pocket models were manufactured with less than half being engraved. To find one as untouched and fine as this is a challenge and would certainly be difficult to improve upon. No FFL required on pre-1899 firearms.
