Description:

Inv. 6072

Colt U.S. Mdl. 1911, Ser. 678XX Mfg. 1914 Cal. .45acp.

A 98 year old WWI mystery. This rare little beauty has a Savage Mystery
slide. Check out the story on your P.C.

To paraphrase it for you:

In the middle of 1918, The A.J. Savage Munitions Co. of San Diego Cal. (owned by the Savage Family headed by the designer of the original Savage autos when in NY), received a Government contract for 100,000. 1911 pistols.

The war ended in Dec of 1918 and the contract was cancelled. No completed guns were ever delivered. The government did indeed pay Savage over $12,000 at that time to reimburse them for their costs.

It seems the only finished parts were the slides. It is said that the government had taken some of the slides as replacements for 1911s. There are no records either official or commercial to list where they went.

However, every few years one does show up. Typically from generations back with its history long gone. Further, they are usually found (at least it has been my experience) on WWI 1911s.

Keeping that in mind that this gun is one of those rare mystery guns. A Colt frame made in 1913 with a mystery Savage slide. The color match of the finish would indicate that these two parts have been together for more than three quarters of a century.

Retaining about 95+% of what appears to be the original WWI finish, the loss is contained to sharp edge silvering and muzzle wear with some slight toning of the grip straps. There are no pits, rust spots, flakes or scratches, except for the usual take down lever scratch. And that is almost imperceptible.

The left side of the frame has the correct ‘WGP in a Circle’ inspector's mark. The grips are the proper Colt walnut double diamond type. The frame is also a totally correct Colt 1911.. The slide again, a totally correct Savage and stamped with the  "Flaming Bomb S" Savage logo.

The Springfield WWI field replacement barrel has some very sharp rifling with a light even frost in the lands. The bolt face and feed ramp show very little use which is consistent with the frame slide rails.

If you think that finally finding one of these WWI mystery guns would enhance your collection or just want one for bragging rights, this one is the best, in 50 years, that I have ever seen .....$2895.
