Description:
#2474 Gendarmare or Greatcoat Flint Pocket Pistol, almost certain to have been French-made in the early 1800s, but unmarked and having seen pretty heavy use and some abuse. It looks to be about 45-caliber, rifled, and approx 3” iron barrel. The mainspring needs to be properly fitted and installed, but it should then be in good working order and the mainspring is there. The metal is decent and has a thin brown patina; the wood has some slivering and splitting at the forecap area, and the ramrod is a replacement. Now while the word “gendarmare” seems to indicate this was a police gun in France, it does seem a bit small to be an effective police weapon. But this is what I was told these were some 50-years ago …and so who am I to argue? Plus, it sounds pretty danged impressive! Good/VG inexpensive little flint. $395
