Description:
#2473 Unmarked Flint “Blanket Gun” or very small Musketoon (…or perhaps a very large pistol!) It measures about 24” overall and has a 13” barrel that has medium overall pitting and is approx 60caliber. The lockplate has a couple of stripped screw threads and the frizzen is sloppy-worn, so this oddity has seen considerable use in its day. The wrist checking is worn down almost to wear it looks like a photograph, there are brass tacks of dubious age here and there, and the forestock has some rawhide wrapping which adds some color and character, but I can probably hold my breath almost as long as it is old! Still, it does look to be a genuinely old gun, and whether it is a TRUE “blanket gun” from the Mountain Man and fur trade era is pretty much any ones guess. There are no markings at all (that are visible) so there's a reasonable argument that this COULD be very early American-made. But for sure, wherever and whenever it was made, it is an interesting weapon and great conversation piece! Good-Good+ $975
