Description:

Inv. 5957

Burnside 4th Mdl. Percussion, Cal. .54. Ser. 33XX.

How's that for a low serial number? And a really lovely example of a strange breech loader.

The case colored frame has stated to silver to a fine patina. The lever and breech realistically retain about 50% of its case coloring. The breech block and locking mechanism has at least 85%.

The barrel is toning to a velvety soft deep blue brown as is the barrel band. There is no rust or pits anywhere of note. Not even any pin pricks, just an overall toning from age.

The barrel is "P" stamped, the left forward edge of the frame appears to have an "R" and the left side of the stock is cartouche stamped "GC" in a lozenge. The rear sight is marked on the left side "R" and the sight blades are numbered 3 & 5.

The stock and forearm retain about 85-90%of the original lacquer. While they are not flawless, they are really quite nice. There a few small nicks and dings and a large W 3 is carved in the cheek piece.

The gun locks up tight and functions perfectly. The 5 groove barrel is a real pleasure to see. Very bright with sharp rifling. There is just a hint of graying.

Every Civil war collector should have one of these early and unusual breech loaders.
