Description:
Serial #168475*, .45-70, 32 5/8" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is one of the 22,000 or so Model 1873 rifles that were rebuilt by Springfield Armory between 1880 and 1883, using new 1879 type receivers and some original 1873 parts. The barrel retains 97-98% of the Springfield applied blue finish on the barrel and furniture, while the breechblock has a commensurate amount of original color-case hardening remaining. The rifle is equipped with a correct 1879 buckhorn rear sight and pinned front sight blade. The walnut stock has a crisp “SWP/1881" cartouche on the left side of the wrist and there are some small handling marks and small surface blemishes scattered throughout the otherwise excellent military oil finish. The mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly, and an original ramrod is included. These rifles were chosen for National Armory rebuild after hard field use had rendered them serviceable, but unsuitable for issue. This is a handsome star-marked Trapdoor and rates very excellent condition overall. Antique
