Description:
This 18 inch bayonet features a 14 1/2 inch blade with a 6 inch flute in face. Blade is stamped US and M near elbow indicating Federal ownership prior to sale to Maryland. Socket is just over 2 1/2 inches long with simple L Mortice and very small thin bridge. Muzzle diameter varies from .875 to .890 inches. Socket is missing a small piece at rear on top and all surfaces have developed a mostly dark patina with oxidation stains, light scale and several areas of pitting. This bayonet is shown on page 34 or Reilly's American Socket bayonets and scabbards as well as on page 197 #2 of Janzen's bayonets.
