J. McElroy Confederate fighting knife. McElroy produced products in Macon Georgia, Civil War era sabers, bayonets, swords, knives and related items. This weapon features a swaged clipped point , filework to improve grip and stop a thumb from slipping on a smooth blade spine, indication of a fine custom or handmade knife. Most of his work was etched, some as this example , were stamped in two lines, W. J. McElroy Georgia. This example is stamped on the tang or ricasso. Length 19 1/4", Blade 14". C. S. Orndnance Officer {DeBow) of March 29, 1862 stated that McElroy was turning out 20 infantry swords, 20 naval cutlasses, 2o sergeants swords and 20 Bowie knives per week. By late 1863, early 1864, rescources, labor and the demands on the men and machines were taking a toll on the South. All the extra work and refinements of the early days found on McElroy's blades disappeared, being more economical and fast in production. Toward the end of the war, a small firn in Tifton Georgia, did some sub contract work for McElroy. SOLD |
