Description:
Christian Sharps, a Connecticut, began manufacturing arms in the early 1850s. By 1853 he had severed his connections with the firm that bore his name and moved to Philadelphia, where he manufactured pistols and single-shot rifles, first under his own name, and later in partnership with William Hankins.  Over 6,000 Sharps & Hankins carbines, with 24-inch barrel, were manufactured with a protective leather barrel cover for naval usage.  A few hundred more without this cover were purchased by the U.S. Army.  "This is a .52 caliber carbine which fired the .56-52 Spencer rimfire cartridge. Special cartridges were also made for it. It measures 38 5/8 inches overall and has a 23 5/8-inch barrel. Pressing a release behind the trigger and pulling the trigger guard lever downwards, slides the barrel along the forward extension of the frame. Some of these carbines made for naval use have leather covers on their barrels for protection against sea-spray and salt air."   This is a nice example of its type, retaining most all of its leather cover, the receiver retaining 60% of its original finish, and the stock retains its original cartouches.  The stock appears to have been refinished, probably when the sling swivel was removed and a plug put in its place.  The bore is shootable, with sharp rifling, and only minor corrosion.  The action functions great and locks up tight.       PRICE:  $1,650       We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, dealer of fine firearms since 1974.   PH. 859-276-1419         We Buy, Sell and Trade Firearms & Knives.    Have a Individual FirearmFirearms Collection, or Firearms Estate to sell, let us know, we can buy or consignment sell it for you.       (sales at am-firearms)
