Description:
Remington Model 1863 Zouave Rifle 16-91

Approximately 12,500 of these rifles were manufactured between 1862 and 1865. One of the best made and designed rifles of the Civil War Era. They have a distinctly different appearance from the usual Springfield Model 1861. They feature a brass butt plate, patchbox, trigger guard, two barrel bands, and a forend tip. The lock is case hardened, dated 1863 and is stamped “Remington’s” with U.S. eagle. Has a one piece full-length walnut stock. Barrel breech is dated 1863 with eagle head “VP” proof. Has the two leaf folding rear military sight, period ramrod, and wood tampion. Left side of barrel has the military inspector stamp    “Steel R.K.A.”. Left side of stock has the clearly visible but not readable cartouche in box. The stocks are excellent with usual minor dings. Military inspector mark can be found on the butt plate. Strong rifling but does have visible black powder abrasion. Hammer and side plate are a lovely soft brown patina. Barrel is a mix of blue and brown patina with some freckling. This is a fine example of a Zouave that has seen action and has survived in lovely all original as used condition.
