This example retains about 95% original blue with some small spots of older oxidation and some tiny spots of pitting and staining. The scales retain most of their original finish with a small stress crack by the left lower grip screw. An early serial number of 1323 is on the pommel. The flat portion of the grip has the manufacturers mark of "PS"...Polotti Scherma. These Type 1 bayonets are the scarcest of the Italian folding bayonets built for the Model 38 rifle and 38 SMGs; Models 1938A and 1939/49. The SMG variation was built with a stud attached to the crossguard as opposed to a muzzle ring. The serrated latch on this example retains strong original blue and moves smoothly. This latch system was overly complicated and was soon replaced by the more common pommel mounted press stud release. A spectacular example that would hard to improve upon.
