Description:
This is a scarce Colt 1860 Army Percussion Replica that was made by Aldo Uberti for Western Arms Corp back in 1980.  They are one of the best replicas ever made of the Colt and will give a 2nd and 3rd Gen Colt Percussion 1860 a good run for a lot less money!  It is still in the original box and remains unfired. We got this from the original owner who told us he purchased it at the Alabama Gun Collectors Association Show in Birmingham many years ago.  He put his guest badge sticker on the box lid which provides a clue as to what year this was..  The Club label notes that is was their 25th Anniversary Show.  Doing a little research, we learned that the the club was originally formed in late 1954.  So 1979?  The date code on the gun is  "AF" which corresponds to 1980 manufacture so our guess is they held their 25th Anniv. show that year as well.  He must have been at the right place at the right time to pick this one up as they were not available but for just a few years.

These Western Arms were not your run of the mill replicas as they had superior fit and finish compared all other importers at that time.  The grips fit so well that they are comparable to an original Colt and the grip straps are even silver plated.  Very few reproductions were offered with silver plated straps.   The cylinder scene is very close to the original with the Ormsby marking and Naval engagement date like the original.  Of course, Uberti supplied most of these very same components for the latter 2nd Gen and 3rd Generation Colt Percussion Replicas.  That said, they are virtually the same in quality with the exception of one being fully assembled in Italy while the others were shipped to the United States for assembly and finishing.

Western Arms Corp was started by Leonard Allen in the 1970's who also founded and later sold replica Arms back in the 1960's.  The company earned a very good reputation for working with European makers to manufacture highly accurate reproductions at reasonable prices.  In the late 70's, Western Arms became particularly noted for its rendition of the Hawken rifle. Unfortunately for Allen, the Winchester-Olin Corp. took him to court over the name "Western" which was their ammunition division.  Winchester prevailed and Allen lost the rights to the name "Western" in 1980.  Around mid-1980, he changed the name to Allen Firearms.  This 1860 probably one of the last ones they sold under the name Western.  You rarely see them.  The last time I saw of these was in my friends black powder gun shop back in the mid-1980's.  It was their last one and he told me a bit of the story regarding Western and how nice they were but no longer available.  Of course, Allen Firearms still sold these and they are quite scarce in their own right and of equal quality.   I've seen just a handful them over the years.   Following Allen's death in 1987, the company was acquired by Cimarron Arms which continued Allen's relations with Uberti and has maintained their high level of quality throughout the years.

This old Western 1860 is in virtually Mint condition having 99.9% original finish with no rust or deterioration beyond a few minute handling marks.  Still unfired.  The silver plated straps look perfect with no blistering and are beginning to tarnish to a smoky gray.   Screws are perfect. Action is very smooth.  The original box is numbered to the gun with the edges of the lid showing wear.  At 36 years old, the thin red velvet-type holding tray is beginning to show some age and has lost a flakes of material but overall in very good shape. Just a very nice and seldom high quality fore-runner to the Cimarron Uberti!
