Description:
Made between 1871-1877, this Antique Colt handgun is a classic style pocket sized revolver. It takes 22 shorts only. 7-shot cylinder open top. 2 7/8" barrel. Bird's head grip of varnished walnut. Nickel plated cylinder and barrel. The brass frames on these Colt Open Tops were plated in nickel or silver: (It is a little hard to distinguish which type of plating is on this specimen's frame due to the age of the gun. A brass hue can be seen shining through the plating in some areas of the frame). It's very small and comfortable to hold, easy to handle.
A distinct type due to the open top frame, the barrel and cylinder are easily removed by releasing the pivoting latch, the spur trigger, and the 7-shot non-fluted cylinder with the stop slots near the muzzle end. The Open Top 22 had an excellent sales record until its success was cut short by cheap pistols (dubbed by collectors as "suicide specials") flooding the market.
The serial numbers had their own range starting at 1 and continuing through to the end of production. There were approximately 114,200 produced. This one is number 16276.
