Description:
This pair of transitional Holland Royals was originally ordered by H.M. Umberto, The King of Italy when he gave Holland his Royal Warrant. According to Holland's records, they were completed in 1900 and chambered for a transitional 3" 577 cartridge that was regulated for a 650 grain jacketed bullet and 6 drams of black Powder or an unspecified (usually 72-75 grains) of Cordite. Correct for the period, they are proofed only for the black powder load.

The rifles themselves are built on a non-ejector version of the modern Holland Royal action with 26" steel barrels. The rifles appear unfired and the bores are mint. Each weighs 11 lbs and the stocks are 14 5/16ths LOP. All specs match the original factory build sheets and regulation records, a copy of which is included.

The 3" 650 grain Nitro load was very popular at the time and doubles in this caliber were built by most of the major makers, particularly Rigby. It propelles a 650 grain steel jacketed bullet at 1800 fps and is more than adequate for buffalo and elephant, yet could be built light enough for a normal sportsman to carry and use. The same still holds true today and we have a stock of fresh Kynoch ammunition specially loaded for these rifles in England (note: the rifles are in the US).

These rifles only recently emerged from over 100 years in storage and are completely legitimate and fresh to the market. Somewhere along the line, their original case(s) were lost or perished. They have now been carefully replaced with period-correct cases and accessories made by Holland's case maker and carefully reproduced, replacement labels. The condition of the rifles is 100% original, with the possible exception of the recoil pads and the barrel blacking. Though both are correct and look original (the pads are from the period), there is some recollection at Holland's of work being done to these rifles in the late 60's to prepare them for an exhibition of royally owned Holland's, though no such record exists today.

King Umberto l, who ordered the pair, was assassinated three months after they were completed. His son, Victor Emanuel ll, while a passionate hunter and early conservationist (He saved the Alpine Ibex and founded one of the largest Nature Parks in Europe), appears to have never hunted in Africa which perhaps helps explain the pristine condition of this exceptional pair of rifles.

Fresh to the market after over 100 years in storage, this pair of .577 Holland's are worthy of the finest collection. Expensive, but not unreasonably so.

I am happy to discuss prices with any serious potential buyer. I would also be willing to split the pair.
