Description:
This very unusual consecutively numbered pair of Westley Richards single shot rifles (serial #s 35662/3) were completely rebuilt in the early 70's on Deeley Edge "New Underlever" actions. Chambered for the rimless .458 Winchester Magnum and properly proofed by the Birmingham proof house in 1972, it is unclear whether they were made as a special order for a very traditional hunter or simply to put to use a pair of left over actions. Regardless, they display all the fine qualities that have made Westley famous.

Probably re-bored from a prior caliber (the barrels are relatively thin for the caliber, which is off set by weighting the forend), the bores are mint and, overall the rifles show no use and only signs of minor handling. The barrels are 25" long and both rifles weigh 8 and a half pounds each. The barrels are Gold Inlayed with a #1 and #2, as well as the 458 caliber designation. In addition, the actions and under levers are well engraved with about 30% coverage and the action tops feature a beautiful sunburst design.

The stocks are exceptionally well matched, with plenty of figure throughout the butt and good straight grain through the hand. The grip caps appear to be horn and may be from the original guns before their rebuild. The butts have Silvers pads. The stocks measure a very modern 14 1/4" X 1 1/2" X 2" with no cast

Both rifles are cased in a large (52"x11"), purpose-built canvas case with brass corners, an unengraved center medallion and a blue baize lining with a 1970's Westley Richards label. The case appears near new with the exception of a few small spots in one corner of the exterior canvas that appear to be beech stains.

According to Jonathan Kinton in The British Falling Block Breechloading Rifle, fewer than 1000 "New Model" rifles with their very useful offset underlever were made, most in large calibers (often incorrectly called Westley Rivhards Farquharsons) Certainly this modern built pair of Westley Richards 458's carry on that tradition.
