Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Sporting Rifle with Rare 28 inch Factory Octagon Barrel. The serial number of this example is 1144XX placing date of manufacture in 1883. The Buffalo Bill Museum Factory Letter that will accompany this Rifle provides the following description at time of shipment: Serial Number application date: Not available, Type: Rifle, barrel Type: Octagon, Trigger: Plain, Received into the Warehouse: February 3rd, 1880, Shipped from the Warehouse: September 28th, 1883, Order Number: 7630, R&R: None reported. Overall condition is very good. Faded blur remains through out. The bore is dark, however the rifling is present. The action is tight, smooth and mechanically perfect. The 28 inch Octagon Barrel is not mentioned in the Museum Letter do to not being recorded in the Shipping Ledger, very common... You will not find caliber markings on the Barrel or Brass Follower because this rifle is a very early Third Model. The Barrel and Brass Follower are Second Model. This rifle is a "Transitional" rifle or "Clean up" rifle assembled from remaining Second Model parts, nothing went to waste a Winchester!!! Actually a very rare rifle.
