Description:
Colt Richards-Mason (1st Type)

This revolver was designed by two Colt employees, William Mason and Charles Richards, both of which patented designs to convert percussion revolvers into rear-loading, metallic cartridge revolvers. These guns used newly-manufactured cylinders and breech blocks.
This particular example is all-numbers-matching except for the cylinder, which is typical. The gun is mechanically sounds but well-worn, as most went westward and were used hard. There were only 2,100 of these conversions produced from 1871-1873. This example was made in 1873. The brass has a nice patina. The grips are well-worn and uniformly shrunk with age. The on-line barrel address is clear and legible. The bore is dark but shootable. The bolt stops on the cylinder are worn through. The wedge appears to be a replacement. This is a nice example of a true "Old West" firearm.
