Description:
Serial #635, 7.5 x 53.5mm, 20 3/4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an all-matching numbered, “NEUHAUSEN" marked carbine that retains 80-85% of the original blue finish with mild gray fading on the high and projecting edges, as well as thin specks of light surface freckling throughout, heaviest on the bolt and bolt handle. The front sight screw is a replacement. The walnut stock and handguard rate very good overall with an arsenal-applied oil finish, and small handling marks and abrasions throughout. There is a short 1/2" hairline crack at the tang, and a further 1/8" chip behind trigger guard. These carbines were used by the Swiss cavalry and are very similar to the Austrian 1895 Mannlicher, but fed from a removable box magazine instead of a Mannlicher clip. They were rather unpopular because Swiss troopers had trouble with reassembling the bolts after cleaning. The Model 1905 Schmidt-Rubin Carbine (which was also able to fire full power 7.5mm, unlike the Mannlicher) was designed to replace the Mannlicher in service, and most of these carbines were destroyed during drills making surviving examples extremely rare today. This is a very good plus example of one of these seldom seen carbines. Antique
