Description:
1860 Spencer Rifle 56-56 rimfire sn 1842. The first Spencer rifles were issued in February 1863. Number 1000 or so to 2000 were issued to the 5th and part of the 6th Michigan Cavalry Regiment under command of George Armstrong Custer. On the third day of battle at Gettysburg, the 5th Michigan using Spencers, defeated Major General J. E. B. Stuart's cavalry which was ordered to attack behind the Union Army during Pickett's charge. If General Lee's decision to send General Pickett's 12,000 Confederates in a frontal assault on the Union line had succeeded, this pivotal battle could have forever changed our country's history. The 5th Michigan, armed with the firepower of the Spencer rifle, may have changed the outcome of the war. These rare rifles range in value from $5,000 to $8,000.
