Springfield, ANTIQUE, single shot breechloading trapdoor rifle, Model 1879, caliber .45-70, s/n 251913 (mfg. 1883), rifle was manufactured employing a left over 1873 receiver which is factory correct,
Receiver clearly marked with "Springfield" and a really crisp eagle, blue has faded with light scattered tarnish spots (see photos), trapdoor has clear marking of 1873 date with no finish and scattered light tarnish (see photos), correct two piece trigger guard,
Barrel retains some faded original blue and one area of fairly heavy tarnish but no real pitting into metal, BORE IS BRIGHT AND EXCELLENT (should make a fine shooter), Buckhorn rear sight with unslotted screws, correct ramrod,
Stock has no cracks and exhibits normal handling marks with a clear "P' proof and a clear cartouche with the initials "SWP" (Samuel W. Porter) except for the last digit of the 1883 date which has been damaged by a mar, Retail value $1200.00, Sale priced at $995.00
