Description:
Springfiled,  ANTIQUE,   single shot "Trapdoor" rifle,   caliber .45-70,   s/n 73813 (Mfg. 1873-1877),

LOCK & BREECHBLOCK:  lockplate fits flush with stock and is not beveled,  high arched breech block,   two-piece triggerguard,   lockplate displays "Eagle" behind "U. S." over "Springfield",   retains 100% case coloring which has evolved into a pleasing grey look overall with subdued colors,   breech block marked "Model 1873" over "Eaglehead" over "crossed arrows" over "U.S.",   these markings indicate that this example of the Model 1873 was produced in mid 1876,  breech block is case colored with brilliant colors indicating that it was re case colored by water quenching after 1877,   all markings are sharp,

BARREL:   32 5/8" in length,   BORE IS SHINY AND MINTY EXCEPT FOR FIRST INCH IN FROM MUZZLE WHICH EXHIBITS LIGHT PITTING,   RIFLING IS VERY SHARP,   rear sight with sliding leaf graduated up to 1200 yards,  barrel retains 98% deep blue,   barrel is proofed with a "V" (Viewed) over a "P" (Proofed) over an "Eagle head" over a small "P",   THE ABBREVIATION "MASS" IS LOCATED ON TOP OF BARREL IN FRONT OF RECEIVER,     our best guess is thatn this is an original 1873 model which has had the breech block re case colored, and been arsenal  restocked in 1898 for the Massachusetts National Guard or militia for their use as the home guard or for use in the Spanish-American War which began in 1898,

STOCK:   stock is later type having two cartouches,   one cartouche which is partly obliterated reads "SWP" (Samuel W. Porter) over "1885",   a second readable cartouche having inspectors initials which appear to be "JSA" is dated 1898,   condition of wood finish is EXCELLENT with the exception of the partly obliterated cartouche and a storage scratch between the two cartouches,   A REALLY NICE PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY,   Retail value $1500.00,   Sale priced at $1200.00

We cater to first time GI buyers. Don't worry, we are real.  We provide our phone number as part of our response to your first inquiry.  You can purchase from us with total ease and confidence. We will guide you through the purchasing process if need be. We are a Platinum dealer and Verified Seller on GI having placed over 3500  listings so far.  GI is the only site on which we advertise.

We strive to describe all our sale items accurately and fully and include professional quality photos of each one.  Although we offer a 3-day, no questions asked, return policy it has rarely been used the entire 56 years (since 1960) we have been in business under the same owner with whom you will personally be doing business.

The first potential buyer who states that he definitely wants an item gets it. Those having questions who do not definitely commit to purchase in their first inquiry will have their questions answered but may lose the sale if another buyer e-mails after they do and definitely commits to purchase before we can get back to the first inquirer to answer their questions. This happens almost daily and disappoints a lot of people. If you see something you want- state a definite committment to buy it. You will not be disappointed.
