Description:
SOLD...Antique Colt 1851 Navy revolver. Here is a bit better than average Colt 1851 Navy.  I have owned this one since 2007.. Has the standard 7 1/2" barrel and in .36 caliber percussion. S/N 171657 and made in 1863. ALL matching numbers including the wedge and arbor pin. No number on the rammer as is 100% correct in this S/N range as Colt stopped numbering the rammers at about 165,xxx. The mechanics are excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun. Very little cylinder front to rear movement and very little wobble on the cylinder to arbor pin fit. Rock solid barrel to frame fit with NO wobbles at all.  ALL hammer notches are perfect and indexing is perfect. The nipples are all in shootable condition as I have fired this gun many times. Very accurate. No wonder Wild Bill Hickok carried a pair of them.. The metal is pretty much smooth medium brown patina with a little bit of minor roughness in one small area on the cylinder were it looks like the gun has layed in a holster. The bottom of the barrel still retains quit a bit of original bright blue and a little blue remains on the lower side flats of the barrel as well.{see photos} Traces of blue around the wedge screw on both sides were protected as well. Good traces of case color on the bottom of the rammer flat as well {see photo}.. All the screws are serviceable and not all burred up. All the markings are excellent. The cylinder has about 50% to 60% cylinder scene. {see photos}. The cylinder shows a very light drag line from the guns locking bolt being out of time years ago but I repaired that long ago and the bolt indexes the cylinder notches perfectly now. This gun is rock solid everywere. The bore is good with strong rifling with the usual black powder roughness. The chambers are very good as well with no issues. The grips are dinged up mostly on the left side and show wear to the toes and heels. NO cracks or repairs. Shows some common dings on the butt but nothing bad at all. Not used as a hammer as many you see. {see photo}.. The grips also still show what I think is some original varnish. They fit very well and not cleaned on or undersized like many you will find. No silver on the brass as is common on these 4th models. This is a pretty nice ole 51 Navy with some finish and cylinder scene for the money these days. Would display very well with an old slim jim holster if you have one. These 51 Navies are the first real holster revolvers in the larger '36 caliber and many gun fights were fought with these holster revolvers. Very good reputation for being dependable and accurate. Very popular in the early years in the gold fields also and of course the Civil War. Just a nice and honest 51 for your collection. $35 insured shipping.
