Payment Types Accepted: Description: SR JEFFERY & SON LTD, GUNSMITHS AND SPORTS SHOP, GUILDFORD: REGISTERS OF TRANSACTIONS AND CARTRIDGE ORDER AND STOCK BOOKS, 1902-1989. In 1851, Richard Jeffery, originally of Farnham, took over the gun making business of Henry Piper, of 118 High Street, Guildford, and began trading from 17 High Street. Jeffery's premises were beside Jefferies Passage, itself named after Henry Jefferies, a pharmacist, who began trading from this location in 1815. In 1863, Jeffery moved to premises at 137 High Street, Guildford (renumbered 134 in 1960#. Upon his death in 1877, the business passed to his nephew, Samuel Richard #d.1928#, who expanded it to include the sale and repair of bicycles in 1890 and motor bikes in the 1900s. Samuel was succeeded in 1928 by his nephew Harold #d.1970), who established SR Jeffery & Son as a limited company soon afterwards. During this period, the company bought gun parts manufactured in Birmingham which they assembled and finished to the customers' specifications in Guildford.\nThe business remained in the family until it was sold to John and James Marchington in 1988. They in turn sold the company to their cousins, David and Ian Watson in 1991. Throughout, the company continued to trade under the Jefferys' family name. In 2000, the Guildford store had six departments: sports clothing and equipment, outdoor activity clothing and equipment, country clothing, fly-fishing, skiing and snowsports, and a gunroom. By the late 1990s, the 18th century listed premises were in need of a great deal of refurbishment which the company could not afford to undertake. The Watson brothers were unable to find a purchaser to take on the dual commitment of the business and the necessary restoration work. Consequently, they relinquished their lease of the building and the company ceased trading on 31 August 2001. With original hang tag.
