Description:
Serial #8099, .222 Super Rimmed, 26 3/4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This rifle was built by Jonathan Kirton, renowned single shot expert and author of “The British Falling Block Breechloading Rifle from 1865”, which is now in its second edition. In order to build the rifle, Mr. Kirton utilized a Hammerli barrel that was contoured and fitted by Elwood Epps of Ontario. The action was given a French gray finish and engraved by the late Mrs. Heidi Hiptmayer, a Ferlach trained engraver, in the style of the 1876 U.S. Centennial Sharps rifle (her signature appears on the bottom of the action adjacent to the serial number). The action is engraved with border and scroll along the edges and corners with the left side also being engraved "Borchardt Patent / Sharps Rifle Co. / Bridgeport, Conn. U.S.A.". The right side is engraved "No. 8099 / J.G. Kirton / 1972". All engraving was expertly executed by Mrs. Hiptmayer, and both the action and barrel were finished by her husband, Klaus. The frame has a lovely pewter gray patina, while the barrel retains 99% of the original blue finish overall. The rifle was stocked by Kirton himself, and feature a checkered steel shotgun buttplate and checkered steel grip cap. The stock and forend have flawlessly executed checkering, and retain 99% of the original varnish. Mr. Kirton also made the claw mount bases, which currently mount a Pecar 6x scope with No. 4 reticle, and clear optics. The rifle is housed in a 1970s era hard-sided gun case, and comes with: an unnumbered original Sharps-Borchardt .45-70 barrel that has a very good bore, retains about 40% evenly thinning original blue with clear markings, and original military sights; four boxes of once-fired .222 Super Rimmed cartridge cases; and reloading dies. This is a beautifully engraved and finished rifle, chambered in a terrific varmint round, and remains in excellent condition overall. Antique
