Description:
RIGBY – LONDON – 30-06. – RARE Light Deluxe Magazine Rifle – 24’ Bl – MINT

John Rigby & Co., 13 Pall Mall, London, W.1 - John Rigby’s Light Deluxe Magazine Rifle built on a Mauser Action in .30-06 Springfield, SN 6395 (April, 1984) and proved in London at 18 tons.  This rare Light Deluxe (engraved, and features Buffalo horn accoutrements) is Rigby’s best quality magazine rifle.  While .30-06 is quite common in most rifle maker lines, for Rigby it is unusual.  This one features a 24” barrel with island rear express sight with two leaves (1 standing and 1 folding), Rigby’s short front ramp with 6.5mm silver bead and folding sight cover, and barrel front sling eye. The action is a 98 Waffenfabrik Mauser-Oberndorf Commercial action. The barrel and stock have the correct Rigby serial number. Its steel one-piece hinged straddle floorplate with a center-bow release, and trigger guard are profusely engraved with the Rigby scroll pattern and inscribed with gold-filled letters: Rigby .30-06. This exact gun is shown on YouTube, Special Guns with Roger Rule, Episode 2. Start with rogerrule .

The scope mounting system is the takedown German-made EAW Quic-Loc bases and rings holding a Swarovski 3-10x42A  Habicht scope with plex reticle made in Austria (SN MA7334316). The safety is the German version Rechnagel three-position sideways swing safety copying the Win. Model 70, user-friendly for scope use.

The Light Deluxe stock has the classic Rigby monte carlo comb in beautiful streaky dark walnut figure, shaped with a sculptured shadowline cheekpiece, and includes an inlaid monogram oval (vacant for owner’s initials), buffalo horn pistol grip cap, buffalo horn forearm tip, and full wrap around point pattern checkering (22 lpi), 14 1/2” LOP to its skeleton steel checkered buttplate, 7 lbs, 3 oz. without scope.

The internal inletting is excellent, best London quality.  The name and address are on the barrel, “John Rigby & Co., 13 Pall Mall, London.”  This piece is still manufacturer-fresh, all original with the blue at 99%, original wood finish at 99%, the checkering 99% (diamonds still sharp to the touch), and the bore is sharp and clean.  The Light Deluxe Magazine Rifle was Rigby’s top-drawer London Sporter intended for the gentleman hunter but built to handle the rigors of hard field work.

Verified by Rigby’s Gunroom Manager, David Miles, this Light Deluxe Magazine Rifle (serial number 6395) was built on a Mauser action for John Kessler in April 1984. Cased with original maker’s label.

About Rigby: According to Geoffrey Boothroyd, Rigby’s “date of foundation was 1735” which “flourished in Dublin (and) Opened their London shop at 72 St.James’s Street in 1866 under the management of John Rigby.”

George Caswell of Champlin Arms gives a brief history from there:
“Rigby was at 72 St. James's St from 1866 to 1907 and then at 43 Sackville St. from 1908 to 1955 and then on to 32 King Street, St James's. In 1963 the shop moved to 28 Sackville Street and in 1969 to 13 Pall Mall (where this gun was made). In 1984 J Roberts & Son (Gunmakers) Ltd bought the company and in 1985 moved it their premises to 5 King Street, Covent Garden. In 1987 the factory and shop moved to 66-68 Great Suffolk Street, Southwark. In 1997 the goodwill and rights to the Rigby name were bought by Rogue River Rifle Works and a new company, John Rigby & Co Inc. was formed at 1317 Spring Street, Paso Robles, California. On about March 1, 2013 John Rigby & Co. was acquired by Blaser of Germany. All connections with the unbelievable and indescribable mess in California have been severed, and the Rigby Company is being moved back to London and run by Marc Newton and Patricia Pugh. I wish them well, Long live the King! “

The last MSRP on the Empire Best Quality magazine rifle was $18,500.00 without engraving.  The Deluxe Magazine Rifle and the rare Light Deluxe (with horn accoutrements and engraving) typically ran 20%  ($22,200) to 30% ($24,050)  more depending on the extent of the engraving. Checking with Rigby today, this rifle would cost new $29,673 plus $710 for the scope mounts plus after-market scope.
