Description:
This is a very rare Cogswell & Harrison Certus Dangerous Game Rifle in 450/400 Nitro Express. They were made circa 1905-1906 on a reliable action of their own design in an ingenious manner so that a double rifle rimmed cartridge would reliably feed and extract from a magazine rifle. They made very few of these guns and this particular example is the best one you'll find shown anywhere on the Internet.

In this publication that describes the gun they were unable to find a specimen to photograph in anywhere near as high of a condition as the subject gun of this sale. ://countryclubuk/ci/ci76_rifles.pdf

This was in 1905 and still is today, an affordable, reliable dangerous game rifle for use on a variety of prey. I had great success using another vintage Cogswell & Harrison rifle in Africa last year and would not hestiate to put this rifle into service.

The gun has been fit with an Old English recoil pad which makes recoil quite present to shoot with even the full Nitro load for which the gun is proofed. The regulation load so stamped by the London proof house is 60gr cordite and a 400gr bullet. Bullets and brass are affordable and readily available for this cartridge and many load recipes exist with IMR4350, 3031 and others to reproduce the regulated load.

The gun features an island rear sight base with one standing sight regulated at 50 yards and four folding leafs with gold inlay references for 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards. The original 25" barrels have not been cut down as was so often the case.

The gun is tight overall with a nice trigger pull, crisp safety and smooth bolt operation. Stock is a beautiful British red oil finish to the nicely grained English Walnut. Checkering exhibits some wear and the stock has the customary handling bumps of a vintage African game rifle.

The gun includes a beautiful brass and leather case with wool baize lining that reused the original British case lock and other components. Custom cleaning rod and oil bottle included and proper maker's label. The case is a true safari case with two tiers, top tier for the rifle, lower tier for cleaning rod, ammo and accessories.

Very fairly priced considering the cost of the case alone nearly approaches the price of the gun. You'll not find another Certus in the marketplace in this condition and the unique original engraving and figure of this example make it a high grade example.

The gun is C&R eligible. I will ship the rifle within the USA to a licensed FFL or C&R FFL. Local pickup is possible if you are an Illinois resident with a valid FOID card. Shipping will be via UPS ground at a charge fo $75 flat rate for the gun and case.

Feel free to contact me with questions about the rifle. I hope the new owner gets enjoyment and use from the rifle. I've personally relished using vintage rifles on my African safaris and hope you will too.
