Description:
SOLD..Antique Smith & Wesson New Model #3 SA in.44 Russian. Here is a well used but all matching New Model #3 Smith & Wesson. Very early S/N 1009 and all matching including the wood grips. Has the standard 6 1/2" barrel and in the great shooting .44 Russian caliber. This ole hog leg has no finish remaining and is an aged gray color. Shows some very light pin prick type pitting on the barrel and front sight that has been cleaned up.Nothing deep into the metal or detracting from this ole gun. The barrel markings are readable. The mechanics are good. It cocks and locks up fairly tight. The rebounding hammer works like it should and the hammer notches are correct and all positive. There is no wobble at the hinge and just very slight play at the latch at the barrel to frame fit. Nothing rattles and is a fairly tight gun. Someone has went to the trouble make all new and correct frame screws and even fire blued them !!!! There has been some amateur gun smithing welding done on the frame to make the barrel latch tighter.{see photo}.. This is not the correct way to fix the problem but was good enough I guess for whoever done the work. The latch is fairly tight as I say with just a tad bit of play. The extractor works sometimes. It raises up but does not always pop back down with out a little help and then when you close the gun, it feels a little griity so I assume the ratchet teeth on the extractor are just worn out. If you hold the cylinder when you open the gun, it seems to work A LITTLE better??? I have no other idea than that of it is just worn out so don't expect the extractor to work like it should because it does not!!! The bore is good with minor roughness and the chambers are clean and smooth. The wood grips are pretty nice really and are matching inside. No cracks and are a perfect factory fit to the gun of course. Has some dings on the bottoms as you can see but still real nice early wood grips Smith used on these early guns. Has good mainspring and bolt spring. .44 Russian cartridges fit perfectly in the chambers. Front sight has never been filed on or messed with. This is a well used ole hog leg bit it is all there and the action works good. I have not shot this one. If I would, it would be one of those things were I say "hold my beer and watch this" . Would probably shoot just fine but I will not say it is safe to fire and if you do, you do it on your own terms and please us correct black powder loads. It is what it is. Would display very well with a worn holster if you have one. Not a bad looking gun at all. Just has an extractor  issue as mentioned. About as cheap as they get and still work. $25 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. I came up with duplicate photos somehow so if you want to see more of this beauty queen, give me a call.
