Description:
  • Excellent DWM Model 1902 Luger Carbine with Matching Stock and Original Sling
  • Caliber: 7.65 Luger
  • Barrel: 11 3/4"
  • Note:  Here is a rare collector opportunity.  This 1902 DWM Luger Carbine has surfaced for the first time since it was purchased by the original owner, Rowena Dunphy.  Mrs. Dunphy, formerly Rowena Burns, was a San Francisco socialite and daughter of capitalist Mr. D.M. Burns (President of Candelaria Mining Co.).  She married Mr. Charles Dunphy in March of 1902 and settled in the Bay area where Mr. Dunphy was associated with his father Wm. H. Dunphy in the Home Life Insurance Company.  We acquired the carbine from Mrs. Dunphy's grandson Charles who used to shoot the gun with his grandmother in the basement of Mrs. Dunphy's San Francisco home.  Around 1955 Mrs. Dunphy put several items in storage at Bekins.  Among the items placed in Bekins care was a large chest of drawers in which was found this 1902 Luger Carbine some 30 years later when her grandson removed the furniture from storage.  Tragically the original leather take-down case and magazine had been separated from the gun and have not as yet been found.  However, the gun does qualify for an 'excellent' rating.  The original magazine has been replaced with a period military serialized magazine.  The bore is bright with strong lands and grooves, but shows some frosting and light pitting it's full length.  The original rust blue finish shows some minor points of corrosion on the take-down plate and left toggle, but overall  the blue remains at 95%+.  The strawed parts (trigger, take-down lever, extractor, ejector, and stock lever) remain at 98%+ with some pinpoint spots of frosting.  The original sling (rare in itself) is in place and shows no wear or damage.  The matching detachable buttstock shows no abuse or damage and is fitted with the original black horn butt plate and unmolested screws.  The forend has only minor apologies showing some light compression marks on the left side behind the schnaubel.  Both stock and forend show nearly all their original factory finish.  The grip panels are exceptional showing no oil staining or handling damage.  The checkering is excellent on all wood parts.  This is certainly the finest condition Luger carbine we have had the pleasure to add to our inventory.

As you may or may not know, these carbines were an early attempt by DWM (Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken) to create a lightweight rifle substitute to compete with the Mauser Broomhandle Carbine specifically as well as the other stocked pistols in the European market at the time.  A total of 2500 of this model were produced in two serial number blocks.  This pistol was produced in the second block of 1400. In December of 2011 Rock Island s sold a similar, but more complete gun for $51,000.00. Owning this little beauty will put you in the company of Teddy Roosevelt and the  Kaiser.  Please call or e-mail us with any questions or need for clarification of this description.
