Description:
For sale is an exquisite James Purdey (Alex Henry) falling block 577 Express rifle.

The rifle carries black powder proof marks and is chambered for the 2 3/4" 577 Express cartridge.   The barrel is 28" long, with a full length rib that is engine turned over the entire length, except for a non-embellished banner that reads "James Purdey 314 1/2 Oxford Street London."

The action is engraved "Alex'r Henry Patent" and has a left side hammer with typical Alexander Henry stepped lock plate.   Bore is excellent - no pitting or frosting.  Single standing rear sight has platinum center line and is finely engraved "100 yds".

Wood is very good, showing a few handling marks commensurate with age. Rather than a typical pointed widow’s peak, steel butt plate has a pleasing, rounded peak at the heel of the stock.   Length of pull is 14 3/8", and no discernable cast so it is suitable for both right and left handed shooters.

Serial number is 8901.

A fantastic rifle that exhibits the best of both worlds - London (James Purdey) and Edinburgh (Alex'r Henry)!

Any collector of fine vintage rifles will find nothing to be unhappy about with this one, however buyer will be granted full visual inspection privileges for a period of three days (buyer pays return shipping and insurance).
